This year, Japanese watchmaker Citizen celebrates the 30th anniversary of its flagship collection, The Citizen. To mark the occasion, the brand has released two limited-edition timepieces as part of its Iconic Nature Collection, which pays homage to Japan’s ever-changing landscapes and deep-rooted traditions.
Introduced in 1995, The Citizen collection has stayed true to its ethos of accurate timekeeping, readability, and durability. Over the years, several high-precision models have been introduced, including the 2019 Eco-Drive watch with an astonishing ±1 second annual accuracy. Now available globally, these 30th-anniversary editions combine Citizen’s high-accuracy Eco-Drive movement with Japanese craftsmanship inspired by nature.
The dials of these timepieces feature Tosa Washi paper, a centuries-old Japanese craft known for its delicate textures and association with ink drawings and calligraphy. The brand embraces the concept of Okashi, an aesthetic philosophy that finds joy in small, everyday details.
Expressing the concept, the spring edition (Ref. AQ4106-00A) is inspired by early morning spring, the Unryushi paper dial evokes the delicate hues of sunrise and cherry blossoms. The other is the summer edition, Ref. AQ4100-22L, which evokes Japan’s summer nights, featuring hand-dyed indigo blue Washi paper, mirroring the deep blue of a starlit sky.
Both models feature faceted baton-style hour markers, polished bevelled hands, and a framed date window at 3 o’clock. Citizen’s Eagle Mark symbol, a sign of excellence, is applied at 6 o’clock on the dial, as well as on the crown and caseback. The build maintains water resistance of up to 100 metres.
The timepieces are crafted in 38.3mm in Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium™, a material five times harder than stainless steel, making it both lightweight and durable. Each model features a unique Duratect coating for added protection and colour enhancement—Duratect Sakura Pink for the spring edition, and Duratect Platinum for the summer edition.
At the heart of these anniversary editions beats the Citizen Calibre A060, a high-accuracy quartz movement first introduced in 2011. The movement offers ±5 seconds per year precision, thanks to thermo-compensation technology. It is a solar-powered movement, which eliminates the need for battery replacements, with an 18-month power reserve on a full charge in power saver mode. Interestingly, the date complication here is the perpetual calendar, which adjusts automatically every month, requiring very little maintenance. Also, the hour hand can be adjusted independently, making it ideal for frequent travellers.
Both models come with crocodile leather straps, crafted by a Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified tanner, highlighting Citizen’s commitment to sustainability. The folding clasp is colour-matched to the case and features a push-button release for easy wearability.
Each model is limited to just 400 pieces worldwide, and will be available for purchase starting May 2025. The spring edition is priced at INR 2,56,000 (approx.) and the summer edition will retail at approx. INR 2,50,000.
