Founded in 1999, Formex is an independent, family-owned Swiss watch brand based in Biel/Bienne. The brand introduced the Space Rock in 2022 and the Space Gold in 2024—both featuring dials made from Muonionalusta meteorite, presented in either its natural tone or with a rose gold electroplating. This year, the brand completes this celestial trilogy with the introduction of the Essence Space Glacier, featuring the same meteorite dial now electroplated with 98% sterling silver, bringing alive the aesthetic frontier of the ice. As with its predecessors, each dial is marked by a unique Widmanstätten pattern—a natural crystalline structure found only in meteorites.
To bring out the natural brilliance of the meteorite, Formex developed a two-stage finishing process. First, the dial is electroplated with 98% pure silver, then six ultra-thin layers of glacier-blue zapon teinté — a translucent, cellulose-based lacquer — are hand-applied, revealing the texture rather than masking it. The result is a crisp, shimmery dial with an icy hue, soldered directly onto the material. Even the beveled date window is precision-machined into the solid meteorite. The indices, hands, and logo are finished in rhodium and filled with Super-LumiNova® BGW9.
The Space Glacier comes in two case dimensions, 39 mm and 43 mm, crafted in 316L stainless steel with a grade 2 titanium inner container, with mirror-polished chamfers and vertically brushed surfaces. Focusing on ergonomics, the Essence’s patented Case Suspension System uses miniature springs to absorb shocks and enhance comfort during daily wear.
Inside, the timepiece beats with a COSC-certified Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, offering 41 hours of power reserve.
The watch is worn with an option of stainless steel bracelet, or an Italian leather or black rubber strap, all closed with a deployant clasp with a gradual 7 mm micro-adjustment. The straps are designed with a tool-free quick-release system that allows easy strap and bracelet changes.
The Space Glacier is a limited production edition of 100 pieces each for the 39 mm and 43 mm versions. Pre-orders begin on April 24, 2025, with deliveries starting at the end of April. Pricing begins at approx. INR 2,03,000 for versions with leather or rubber straps and approx. INR 2,14,000 for the stainless steel bracelet edition.
What we think -
A fan favorite makes another stellar move! Formex watches are the crown of the micro-indi space and this new release in their most popular line is simply fantastic. One gets so much value with the Formex Essence that it puts to shame a lot of other mainstream brands, and the best from the brand is yet to come. Only sad thing is that Formex watches are unfortunately not officially available in India.
